Who It's For
Group Community Networking is for adults who learn best out in the world, not in a building. Some participants choose it as their whole program; others blend a few Group Community Networking days with Community Integration days at our center. It's a great fit for people working on independence goals like riding transit, managing money at real registers, and showing up for a volunteer shift, and for folks who simply do better on the move.
What a Day Looks Like
Groups are small on purpose: one staff member with two to four participants, matched by interests and support needs. A typical week might include:
- A standing volunteer shift: sorting donations at the food co-op, shelving at the library branch, walking dogs at the animal shelter
- Fitness at the YMCA or a walking group on the PATH trail
- Errands and life skills: grocery lists and budgets, the post office, the bank, the barber shop
- Lunch out, ordered and paid for by participants themselves
- Free community events: farmers markets, library programs, concerts in the park
These aren't field trips. The goal is regular roles in regular places, where staff and neighbors know our participants by name.
Our Staffing Approach
Community work asks a lot of a DSP, so our Group Community Networking staff are experienced team members with extra training in community safety, travel training, and supporting communication with the public. Each group carries a day plan tied to participants' ISP goals, and staff document progress the same way we do in the center.
